Here is an amazing statistic: Denver Public Schools is currently educating approximately 1,500 homeless students. And that number is growing every day. In fact, the number of homeless in the DPS system is about 11 percent higher this year than last year, reflecting the impact of the tough economy on families.
Here is another fact: your support of Steele Elementary School through the purchase of your ticket does double duty because 5% of each ticket sold will be used to help DPS help educate these homeless children. The Home Tour is proud to support DPS' Educational Outreach Program (EOP)!
Last year, the Wash Park Home Tour donated $2,000 to the EOP. How did the money help DPS homeless students? Our donation went towards transportation ($35 gets one child to school for a month), uniforms ($40 buys a school uniform), sports equipment ($60 allows one child to play sports for a season) and more.
According to EOP liaison Anna Stout, the EOP works to break the cycle of poverty through education. "Our program has two areas of focus," she says. "EOP helps students and families with school readiness, like making sure they have supplies, clothes, sports fees, uniforms, and especially transportation. For example, when a family is evicted, EOP tries to ensure that that student can stay at the same school. When a student changes schools, it's so disruptive that he or she generally loses 4 months of learning," explains Stout. "The second area of focus is scholastic success. EOP works to help students achieve scholastic success by providing counselors and tutors. To achieve success, it's critical to stabilize the learning environment," noted Stout.
Although EOP staff are employed and paid by DPS, all the services EOP provides are funded solely by donations. On behalf of Steele School and DPS' Educational Outreach Program, we want to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU for participating in this year's Wash Park Home Tour.
